This series of three pen-and-ink drawings examines the body as a shifting landscape. Each work is viewed from above, allowing the human form to merge with the terrain. Line becomes the main force of transformation, tracing the body as if it were topography and revealing small figures that live and move within these larger forms. Their presence points to a shared, interdependent world.

About the artwork:

The drawings continue the artist’s interest in the grotesque and in hybrid bodies- images that appear calm at first but hold tension and unease beneath the surface. These forms exist in an in-between state, shifting between human and nonhuman, plant and flesh, revealing how unstable the boundaries we create for ourselves truly are.

By merging figure and landscape, the series challenges the idea that the human body stands apart from nature. The drawings present both as part of the same living system, offering a quiet reflection on connection, permeability, and continual change.

About the artist:

Wells uses painting, drawing, printmaking, and animation to communicate ideas of environment, relationships, and body/gender. In Willow Wells' creations, the metamorphic journey becomes a visual language, inviting viewers to engage with and reflect upon the nuanced complexities of the human experience.

She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts where she studied the figure as well as traditional techniques. She then received her Master of Fine Arts from the University of South Florida. She began employing concepts of metamorphosis into her work, resulting in figures seamlessly merging with botanical elements.

Her work has been exhibited at the Sarasota Art Museum, Bradbury Art Museum, and the Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa, Florida. Her work is also held in the permanent collection of Arkansas State University
