Skipping Rope
In this series of artworks made with Chinese ink on Yupo paper, the artist draws upon the childhood experience of play by constructing highly charged compositions. The characters’ facial expressions and identities in these images are not clearly defined, often taking on ghostly forms. Portrayed by only a few brushstrokes, the figures seem to float upon a turbulent sea of colors within a realm of half-imagined memories.
In her work, Yi Gao takes an experimental approach to her practice to transcend conventional boundaries and power structures. She uses color, rhythm and repetition to generate movement and evoke emotion. Her medium serves as a vessel for archiving the experience of migrating across multiple dimensions.
