This is still technically a studio painting, but it departs from the others in that it is based on the view from a section of the large wall of windows (seen in the background of Studio Cart) that opens outward, revealing the rooftops of other buildings in the industrial area of Los Angeles where my studio is located. The colors are also closer to real life than in the other works. However, what remains consistent is the pushing of elements (in this case, the black steel framing of the window panes) to create a composition and flattened perspective that feels plausible at first glance, yet is ultimately impossible.

About the artist:

Zack Rosebrugh primarily works in oil and gouache, creating paintings that emerge from small, everyday moments—a friend sitting, a building in sunlight, flowers on a table. These observations are pared down and rearranged until a composition feels both compelling and harmonious. His process is reminiscent of the French approach to landscaping: a shrub or tree carefully trimmed into a shape otherwise impossible in nature, inviting the viewer to appreciate not only the object itself but also the deliberate act of shaping it.

Zack Rosebrugh (b. 1993, Baltimore, MD) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. He earned a BA in Film Studies from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ (2012–2016). Rosebrugh’s recent group and duo exhibitions include Lush at Hashimoto Contemporary, New York City (July 2023); For the Love of Dog at Hashimoto Contemporary, Los Angeles (August 2023); Group Show at Lobster Club, Los Angeles (November 2023 and February 2025); Sexy Christmas VII at The Lodge, Los Angeles (December 2023); Left Unsaid at Hashimoto Contemporary, New York City (July 2025); Works on Paper at Hampstead Art Society, London, UK (November 2025); and Le Sentiment du Déjà at Galerie PJ, Metz, France (January 2026).
