DREAMSCAPES
In his 1924 manifesto establishing the precepts of the Surrealist movement, the poet André Breton announced that his goal was to overcome the contradictions between dreams and reality, to meld the two into the "absolute reality" of "sur-realism." The artists of the Surrealist movement achieved this in a number of ways: through evocative and nonsensical poetry, through sculptures that combined unlike found objects, and through paintings that deployed the techniques of realism and perspective to produce strange and improbable visions.
