HOW TO DISPLAY ART

Strategies, tips and ideas for how to display artworks at home.

1

CREATE A FOCAL POINT – Rooms both big and small can feel nebulous without a strong visual to draw your eye. An artwork instantly addresses that issue and allows for furniture and other design objects to be arranged around it.

2

PAIR WORKS OF CONTRASTING SCALE – Not every artwork has to be presented solo. Contrasting works of art can make for a strong visual dialogue, and when the works are of different sizes, it can also add a new sense of dimension to a room.

3

DEFINE A ROOM – There aren't always walls or other architectural features to separate spaces with different functions, especially with more open floorplans. Artwork can help designate a section of a room for a specific purpose, such as making a dining area feel distinct from a kitchen or living room that might share the same square footage.

4

EMBRACE EASE – Placing a work of art in a frame (and on a wall) is a beautiful way to house it. But that's not the only way it can be showcased. In some instances, simply leaning a work–framed or not–on a mantel, bookshelf or other surface can be a more casual and approachable way to incorporate art into a room.

5

ENHANCE AN ENTRYWAY – Lining hallways with art is a great and time-tested way to display works, but the entryway itself often has untapped display potential. Placing art immediately next to an entryway not only uses space that is often bare, but it also makes for an unexpected point of interest.
