For well over a hundred years, comics have served as an outlet to examine (or excoriate) the political discourse and human foibles of the day. It's a tradition carried on by the American-born, French-based Crumb family–R. Crumb, his collaborator and wife Aline Kominsky-Crumb, and their daughter Sophie Crumb–all celebrated artists in their own right.

Born in Philadelphia in 1943, R. Crumb was inspired by the likes of Thomas Nast, Honoré Daumier, T.S. Sullivant and others to develop his signature satirical style. Crumb worked as a commercial artist for several years at the beginning of his career and frequently turns his critical eye to contemporary consumer culture. His work possesses an outsider perspective yet often relates back to his own personal history.
