Scratch Off
A jug with playful forms drawn from kitchen utensils sits in the middle of this pastel. As the title suggests, items from the to-do list have been scratched off, and the marks appear as gestural abstraction. As the cream line cuts through the center, bits of a dark blue coffee cup repeat throughout the composition. The jug simultaneously sits on top and recedes into the activity.
The artist creates pastel drawings and paintings where studio and domestic life merge into one. Impulsive, direct drawings from her home transform into active, colorful abstractions. These richly pigmented pastels reference and distill the artist's daily world. Submerged bits of fringe, wrought iron, writing, and panhandles become clues of the day's events. Employing a call-and-response technique between herself and the artwork, Case sees homelife comprised of countless domestic routines as an active, creative world.
