This intimate painting of a street is based on a digital snapshot. The artist painted this work while looking at the image on his phone screen, a translation process that edits, loses, exaggerates and abstracts information. This work is part of a series of paintings made from photos taken over the span of a year. The images are of urban, rural and suburban locales, creating a timeline that cuts across different sites and terrains.
Charles Mayton’s paintings address contemporary image culture through digital media and painterly abstraction. Mayton has shied away from adopting a fixed style over his career. Instead, he focuses on questioning the disruptions in the history of painting while reflecting on the nature of painting itself.
