Rooted in autobiography, this painting references the artist's upbringing between the island of Puerto Rico and the mainland of the United States. The composition contains traces of the past that express the artist’s diasporic roots, as well as her mother's and grandmother's.

Working primarily in oil paint, Cielo Felix-Hernandez draws on memory and aesthetics derived from cultural legacy to reflect her lived experience as a trans-femme Boricua. The artist's exuberant palette and detailed, referential compositions draw viewers into a space of care, resilience and joy.

Cielo Felix-Hernandez

An interdisciplinary artist working primarily in oil, Cielo Felix-Hernandez’s autobiographical paintings reference her upbringing between the island of Puerto Rico and the mainland of the United States. The artist’s compositions draw on both memory and cultural legacy to reflect her lived experience as a transfemme Boricua. Felix-Herndandez’s detailed, referential compositions feature an exuberant palette that draws viewers into a space of care, resilience and joy—while imagining an expansive transfemme future that exists beyond the confining narratives of coloniality and marginalization.

BIO:

Cielo Felix-Hernandez was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico in 1998. The artist received a BFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.

A solo exhibition of Felix-Hernandez’s work took place at Sargent’s Daughters in New York City in 2022.
