This etching is the fourth print in a series of sign images that the artist began working on in 2019. The first, Lonely Highway, was published that year; the second and third, Sign in a Sandstorm and Sign in a Rainstorm, were published in 2021. Ruscha has said that part of his attraction to signs is his interest in recycling “what is out there in the world.” In this work, the artist has done this with dry wit and humor.

The artist’s word works, his unique compositions that depict words, stand on their own as compelling intersections between art and poetry—employing distinctive language that presents strange new possibilities for meaning.
