Glavin’s paintings draw from locations across upstate New York, New England, and New York City, yet they coalesce into a singular, quietly American landscape. Built from sourceless shadows, blunt highlights, and repeating forms, his works are devoid of human figures—even when interiors peek through windows—creating a lingering sense of absence. Romantic elements like golden hour light and dappled shade meet flatness and skewed perspectives, giving familiar scenes an unsettling edge. Starting from scaled photographic references and precise grids, Glavin ultimately lets memory and instinct guide the work, transforming recognizable places into elusive, composite landscapes.

About the artist:

Henry Glavin explores the architecture and landscape of the Northeast by bathing seemingly comforting and familiar spaces with a stark light that subverts nostalgia. His subjects are drawn from locations across upstate New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Brooklyn, and Manhattan yet emerge from a shared American landscape. Glavin exaggerates romantic tropes, such as traditional “golden hour” landscapes, and blends them with concepts from modern photography to create scenes that feel both staged and spontaneous.

Henry Glavin was born in 1991 in New York City, NY, and lives in Brooklyn, NY. He earned his MFA from Hunter College in New York, NY (2023) and his BFA from Alfred University, New York State College of Ceramics in Alfred, NY (2014).

Glavin has mounted solo exhibitions at The Landing in Los Angeles, CA (2024), Halsey McKay Gallery in East Hampton, NY (2023, 2020, 2018), and Galerie C in Paris, France (2021).
