① Artwork:

This colored pencil drawing depicts a shirtless figure in a hat and surgical mask holding an infant whose skin is surreally tinged blue. Lying next to the two central subjects are another two figures—appearing exhausted or otherwise disaffected. As Kevin Debouis has commented, the artist's work often borrows figures from celebrity culture—re-contextualizing these subjects within a strange and fantastical landscape. Evoking magical realism, the result is at once “mystical, technological and illusory.”

Beauquesne’s work draws from surrealism as much as the digital simulacra of the contemporary moment. The artist approaches the medium of drawing as an act both nostalgic and melancholic, and at the same time recuperative. Beauquesne's compositions bestow a long-lost aura to the reproducible images of our virtual era.
