About the artist:
Jisoo You is a painter and sculptor who draws on the visual totems of modern life- jetplanes in flight, beauty packaging, and towering skyscrapers- subjects that inherently reference industry, culture, and technology, and the systems that shape contemporary existence. Smoothly rendered with a keen sensitivity to light and shadow, You’s work balances precision with atmosphere. Beneath their polished surfaces, her images often carry a subtle tension, where the seductive and the unsettling coexist, imbuing the familiar with an undercurrent of unease.
Jisoo You, (b. 1999, Korea) received her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2022. Recent exhibitions include Tutorial (w/ Sean Jun Yeon), Whistle, Seoul; Arabesque N.2 (w/ Daniel Zeballos), Everything, Chicago; Real World, White Noise, Seoul; A woman with a baguette. In a decisive turn towards abstraction and color, the artist presents here an angular vortex in an unusually vivid red. Geometric and sharp, yet shaded with deflecting gradation, the lines and tones of Dame produce a visual contradiction. One imagines peering into a camera’s lens, or squinting into a tunnel that has begun to abstract and illuminate the orbital mechanism in unexpected ways. It is an alluring window into the unusual.
