The Naked Eye
This painting depicts a woman crouching and contorted into an uncomfortable position, and is transparently enmeshed with a portrait of a woman’s side profile taped to the wall. The standing figure’s face is out of view, begging the question: Is she the painter, the portrait’s muse, or both? Although anonymous, the faceless woman is vulnerable in her nakedness, while the woman with her face exposed in the picture feels safely concealed.
Through the subtlety of a frozen embrace or a broken gaze, Kathryn Kampovsky’s figurative paintings ask us: Are we a community of individuals, or individuals searching for a community? As a shy child, she felt safest observing human behavior from afar. Today, she clarifies and untangles these understated moments as a way to explore identity, belonging, and the role of chance in her paintings.
