① Artwork:

Shadow

This painting depicts harsh sunlight raked across a staircase between two residential buildings. Verging on abstraction, this scene is a dramatic encounter of light and dark represented by the interplay of angular forms. An underpainting of radiant orange, visible through washes of pale yellow and gray, elicits the hot light of midday summer.

Nick McPhail's work chronicles encounters between Los Angeles’ manufactured and natural environments in a combination of impressionistic and painterly flourishes. His compositions feature mid-century architecture among tropical plants and convey the seductive yet unknowable essence of the city.
