Details:

In this piece, the artist depicts a grotesque view of genitalia. Blue legs spread open to exhibit a dark vaginal cavity. The hole demands attention through its presence in the center of the image. Here, Hayes confronts the assumed willingness of female bodies to undergo pregnancy while alluding to the pain that comes with it.

Ovoid and erotic, Olive Hayes’ recent work explores her changing perspective on fertility and how it relates to her sexuality. Cavities and swollen shapes reflect a prior fear of becoming a vessel. Yet, newly emphasized and softened details allude to Hayes’ changed outlook since accepting her lesbianism, with fertility now feeling like an unattainable object of sweetness.
