For Design Week, Montauk Yacht Club has partnered with Platform to present a solo exhibition by artist Joe Henry Baker. Invited by Platform, Baker presents a series of new inversion paintings that reflect and complement the hotel’s surroundings.

In these inversion works, Baker challenges the boundaries of a two-dimensional paintings by exploring both sides of the canvas. The artist paints through the backside, pushing color and texture through to extrude to the front. These rhythmic marks permeate through, accentuating the materials, and inviting the viewer in to experience a painting looking back at them through the canvas - a dual existence within one creation.

‘The heart of my practice is experimentation - I’m continually challenging myself and the work I make to explore materiality. The inversion series follows a simple formula that results in a never ending variability in form - the dot sequence is ordered and serene, yet unmeasured and infinite. These paintings are a meditation in both the act of making as well as the finished work.’
