This painting is an abstracted, mixed-media portrait on canvas made with bobby pins and synthetic hair. The figure in the image is whimsical yet strong, mimicking the fashion advertisements and magazine covers the artist references for her elaborate process, which utilizes multiple layers to create a textural surface.

Audrey Lyall uses varied materials—from collaged paper to found objects—to create densely-packed, Afro-futurist paintings, sculptures, and clothing. She navigates multiple concepts in her practice, including: racial identity and beauty standards, and explores the dichotomy between today’s artificial beauty regimens and traditional ones relating to the African diaspora. Ultimately, the artist seeks to highlight the absurdities of beauty expectations of the current climate and encapsulate the histories behind them.
