O'Keefe's tools—as well as the questions and issues she addresses regarding spatial perception—are rooted in the abstract, formal language of making she developed as an architect.

Erin O'Keefe

Erin O’Keefe’s photographs ask questions about the nature of spatial perception. She uses tools rooted in the abstract and formal language she developed while working as an architect. O’Keefe is interested in the inevitable distortion introduced by the camera when an object is translated from three to two dimensions—causing misalignment and misapprehension for the viewer.

Erin O’Keefe was born in Bronxville, New York in 1962. She holds a Masters of Architecture from Columbia University in New York City and a BFA from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

In 2019, O’Keefe was the recipient of the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in Photography. In 2015, the artist was named one of Photo District News’ 30 Photographers to Watch for 2015. O’Keefe was an NYFA Finalist Fellow in Photography in 2013, as well as a Hey Hot Shot winner, awarded by Jen Bekman Gallery in New York City. In  2010, the artist was first in the Camera Club of New York (CCNY) Photography Competition, juried by James Casebere.

A limited-edition book of O’Keefe’s artwork, Built Work, was published in 2020 by Jane and Jeremy, Brighton, UK. The artist’s work has been featured in numerous publications, including: Artforum; The Paris Review; Harper’s Magazine; The Village Voice; Vogue; The New Yorker; The Huffington Post; Wired; and VICE; among others.

O’Keefe lives and works in New York City.
