For this series, the artist has created a body of “patch paintings” that offer him a unique mode of expression. First, he uses various colors, layers, and shapes to build up a rough sculptural base. Then, he loosely paints seemingly simplistic images on top of them to create his quirky narratives.

Martin Paaskesen explores the expressiveness and physicality of narrative painting. Using intuitive and impulsive approaches, he balances imagery and figuration with process and abstraction.

The surface of Paaskesen's patch paintings consist of small squares of canvas pasted onto a canvas support. Some of the patches may slightly peel off the surface in a beautiful way.

Martin Paaskesen

Martin Paaskesen explores the expressiveness and physicality of narrative painting. By using an intuitive and impulsive approach, he balances imagery and figuration with process and abstraction. His approach is very physical and tactile, partially due to his background as an actor and his understanding of expressive body techniques.

Martin Paaskesen was born in 1987 and lives in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Paaskesen has mounted solo exhibitions at Valerius Gallery in Luxembourg (2023); Mott Projects, New York (2022); and Galeria Fran Reus, Spain (2021).
